Crowdsourcing and gamification help Elenia collect information about the condition of their electrical grid
What was needed
Over 75 000 km of electricity network to maintain
Elenia is Finland’s second largest electrical grid company with more than 75,500 kilometres of electricity network to maintain.
How to keep track of the condition of the grid components between scheduled checkups?
As almost all of us carry a phone in our pocket, Elenia came up with the idea to engage everyone to take pictures of transformers and other grid components through gamification.
The solution
EleniaGO crowdsources collecting information about the network's condition
EleniaGO turns collecting grid data into a game: users get a fun activity (plus prizes) and Elenia gets valuable information about the condition of the electrical grid.
Users collect points by taking pictures of transformers and other grid components. The points can be used to collect prizes.
First, users register and log in to the app. The app locates the user and the collectable items on the map. The app opens the phone’s camera to take a picture and nudges the user to add a comment. This data is then passed on to Elenia.
The player can see data about their own use and check their score and ongoing challenges. And to make it a proper game, the app features a scoreboard to keep track of other players’ scores as well.
With a little bit of imagination, even maintaining the electrical grid can be fun.
